7 About Page Mistakes
In today’s scary world of no privacy it would be tempting to try to hide. And it would be futile. They have already found you. Of course, if you are in business you want people to find you. But in either case you want to put your best foot forward when people search for you on the internet. Since you cannot hide, make the most of the image of you people will see on the web.
If you are an individual you want a prospective employer to see a picture of you smiling and dressed nicely before or instead of the picture of you on spring break in Mexico. (After all, that was a long time ago.)
If you are a company you want your website to promote your and your products or services. You may not be able to erase the negative comments on another site, but you can present your side of the story.
The first place to address your image in on your “About” page. Sonia Simone of Copyblogger Media gives us 7 mistakes commonly made with About pages. Briefly they are:
- You don’t have an About Page – of course you need one.
- I can’t find your name. – Or your phone number. Or your address. Have you ever seen an advertisement for a company with no way to contact them?
- I don’t know what you look like – This is a visual media. People like people. Show them the person or people they are dealing with.
- The writing is boring – This one hurts. But take the time to write something people will read, or don’t write it.
- Using video alone. – Video can be powerful, but you have to give them a reason to watch it before they will click on the link.
- You go on (and on and on) – People don’t like to read. Don’t hurt them with a lot of words.
- You think your About page is about you. – Make your about page an answer to what your customers and readers want, not all about you. This one is probably the toughest to avoid.
